While sorting all the shawls she'd crocheted for Christmas gifts that year, Charmain swore that there'd been a sky blue one, too, but couldn't locate it until vacuumed next to where the tree had been on January 2nd. 

Hedy had been encouraged to take the healing waters down at Lake Sparrowhead, but her innate shyness prevented her from engaging with any of the other visitors, including Helmut, who had demonstrated interest...!

Grandma Eleanor had long since put away her tap shoes, but was delighted when little Greg expressed interest in learning a few of her old combinations.

Even at this early age, future Derby champions, the Coughlins, were fascinated by life in the saddle and after scooting their way to victory (first one to the garage wins!), they'd follow up with a relaxing dip in the pool!

Gladys had an hour and a half before the annual peach cobbler competition down at the Knights of Paducah banquet hall, so she decided to take some sun before undoing her curlers.

Terry was satisfied with this first effort at cake-baking and had insisted on having all the candles for mom Susan's birthday. Susan did manage to retain 3/4s of her eyebrows after attempting to blow them out, too.

Each member of Al Dantino's family was proud of his promotion to Evening Floor Manager at Medina Chrysler-Plymouth, but wife Carla was most elated of all, for she could already envision a new set of "real" drapes for the living room from Elder-Beerman!

In the final analysis, Denise wondered if the mediocre pay and late hours of her job as hostess at The Brass Flamingo was worth all the effort to be glamorous.

Inspired by the success of The Partridge Family, Becky, Clinton, Jessie and Mama Bernadette put their musical (and choreographic) talents to work and emerged as The Kakapo Family.

In truth, Ronnie had every right to be upset on his big day. Not only did Angela blow out the candles on his cake, but big brother Terry unwrapped all his presents!

The only disagreement that Jackie and Wanda Sue had on their Chicago to Seattle train trip was Wanda Sue's insistence on the bottom bed bunk. That way she could sit up in the morning without denting her hair...

It mattered not a bit that Cliff's new fiancee Carol Ann was heartily approved of by his family... if she didn't win over Penelope, the relationship was finished!

It was a lengthy wait outside until the bridal party could make their way through the processional and, unfortunately, third groomsman Richie had taken a few too many sips from his flask and needed to relieve himself on the nearest tree before the ceremony!

While no one was happy that Miss Netticott had passed on, her neighbor June and daughters Karen and Valerie did manage to have a great time rummaging through the estate sale for all sorts of fun finds.

Rayanne wasn't about to have a repeat of what happened to her cousin Mary, who made the mistake of blowing out the candles toward the flammable living room drapes at her house, so she turned her back to them and extinguished the candles without incident.

Fernando tried to put forth a new dance called "The Gimp" at Lucinda's fall fling, but she wasn't having it and insisted that everyone stick to the cha-cha whenever possible...

Things became a bit overwhelming at Cynthia's birthday party what with all the presents and the kids and the noise, but cousin Janet (top left) managed to keep her cool throughout with an occasional refreshment consisting of vodka, triple sec, lime juice and Tang...

Both husbands were proud of their wives' new enterprise Pedazo-Cabello Designs, but Ernesto couldn't help wishing in the back of his mind that they'd come out with a men's line of wigs next season...

Mr. Shiyoki took his class for an excursion that was capped off with a river-side picnic, but unfortunately as he got up from the bench a nail caught his back pocket and tore his pants open, revealing some pink lacy panties where his jockey shorts ought to have been...!

And so all of his life after this, Jonathan wanted to be not a fireman, but the person in charge of throwing the annual fireman's holiday party!

Sven didn't find out until the end of his first day of vacation that he'd somehow managed to mistake coconut oil accelerator for his usual protective lotion, making for a rather startling transformation the following morning.

Betsy had a devil of a time trying to select which of her hand-crocheted shawls went best with her new drip-dry, Dacron pantsuit from the latest Spiegel catalog.

Leroy asked Patrice what she'd done special that night in order to smoke the turkey, but she was afraid to admit that it had happened courtesy of their daughter-in-law Lorraine!

Thelma had requested something in cowhide for her birthday, but her cousin Jeanne misunderstood.

Family portraits of Emily Ann and Rodney were always a bit unusual since they didn't care to stand still for long. And, in this one, Emily Ann tried out a new rendition of the game "Duck, Duck, Goose!" on her brother...!

Initialy, she was enraged that Carlos wanted to drive to Ezra and Janine's wedding with the top down on their convertible, but when Evelyn realized she had a hat that matched her purse and a strip of leftover dress fabric, she compromised and added to her ensemble accordingly...

Julie Marie's 24th birthday almost proved to be her last, but it did teach her not to light a couple dozen candles right next to her bottle of Cutex nail polish remover!

When Frank got Carolee to accept a swim date with him on the Jersey Shore, he hadn't dreamed for a moment that she'd bring along her latest pal Gene in the bargain, but as the day wore on he became less and less irritated by it...

Lewis Coleman was thrilled with his strawberry birthday cake and an assortment of large helium balloons until someone opened a window and he went sailing out clinging to this yellow one!

Penelope had been excited to wear her new Polly Flinders dress to church, but her mother didn't trust her to make it through the service without "going" first so she planted her where she could see her as she was getting ready and know that there would be no accidents in the pew.

Initially, Regina was tentative about heading to the motel party that Leon was holding down at the Super 8, but once she saw that he was well-stocked with Beefeater gin and Canada Dry ginger ale, she knew it would be a swingin' time!

Carol Ann was more than disturbed to attend her "fifth" birthday party and discover only four candles on the cake! Once prepared to attend kindergarten that fall, she found out that in truth she still had one more year to go!

For the twelve and a half years that they'd worked together side-by-side, Jim had sort of existed in the shadow of the more popular Steve, so he was quite thrilled to receive top-billing on the day of their dual birthday party at the office!

Stefanie had spent nearly all of the budget for her wedding dress (which she sewed herself) on the expensive eyelet fabric, so when it came to the veil, she was forced to scrimp and use only a cluster of shoulder length tulle...

Gertrude prided herself on keeping the family smartly dressed and also stylishly appointed. In order to avoid her boys Ernie and Cliff from appearing at all nerdy, she only allowed them to either wear eyeglasses OR a pen in their pocket, but never both...

Garry heard that Right Guard was in search of a new, mustached hunk to appear in one of their upcoming ad campaigns, so he got ready and set the self timer on his camera in order to send in a photo. However, in the end, the company went with someone else...

Carolmarie was elated with all her birthday presents, which included a whole wardrobe of clothing, accessories, a smart purse, grooming supplies and a not-so-subtle hint that her parents were ready for her to move on and move out: the board game Careers!

Elaine thought that all the new construction around her town house was nice and all with all its concrete, but the search for appropriate green space became longer as she and Toby went for their morning walk!

Everyone was so excited about Heidi's thirteenth birthday and the cake that Mrs. Glasur had baked and decorated... except Gunilla, who was jealous that on her tenth birthday she only got a 10" chocolate two-layer.

Sonja and Carol braved the icy roads and snow drifts to get down to Grand Union for provisions. Not only was it double coupon day, but grape juice was $0.97 per gallon!

While Mr. Garner and his daughter Mariette were discussing which of their cameras would take the best pictures, mom Margaret was already winning with her Minolta by snapping one that looked as if flames were jutting out of Jim's head!

FINALLY, Richard was able to convince Jennifer to sneak off with him to one of the most secluded areas of the beach, but he remained unsuccessful at getting her to remove any more of her clothing than this...

Even though he'd, half-jestingly, requested this very thing for his birthday, Rocky was nevertheless flabbergasted to actually receive the red-lace, boned corset with coordinating chiffon negligee for his birthday...

Bertram had had his fill of scrambling for money towards the end of the month and found that he was often able to score a few extra dollars (or, at the very least, a french fried potato and T-bone steak dinner) by loitering suggestively down at the front door of the Carlisle.

Darleen's baby shower was just getting underway and already Missy, Rhonda and Carmela were becoming bored with the opening of presents. Darleen's little brother Timmy did take an unexpected interest in it all, however...

Ariel's baby shower was splendid, but she couldn't help hoping that none of the attendees realized that she still wasn't sporting an engagement ring. She hoped to get Garrett to spirit her off to Gatlinburg in a week or so to make it all legal...

Denise's birthday party was full of spirited fun, but she had to force a smile for this gift, knowing before she even opened it by the shape of the box that it was unlikely to contain one of her favorite things: another paint by numbers kit.

Melody's insistence upon having her portrait taken while sitting on the church parking lot's guard rail led to an interesting situation. Mrs. Fenneman pulled in so fast and so close that it sent Melody jettisoning across the grass squealing, "Help me, Jesus!" to the astonishment of all the parishioners in attendance.

When newly-single Bettina decided to follow through on her annual vacation plans with Irv & Carole and Gloria & Stu, she never realized the extent of the stir it would cause. The boys were happy to have her along, but the gals resented it, especially since she had brought a two-piece suit in lieu of the one she had always worn when married to Ralph...

...And so Myrtle's birthday wish was spoiled when she was all set to blow out her candles and the ever-hovering Milburn wound up with a sudden sneezing fit that took out 2/3rds of the ones closest to him!
